2000: Muffin
For years, she'd enjoyed life indoors, but when she got a case of fleas, 8-year-old Muffin was banished to the backyard. Like millions of dogs across the country who spend their lives trapped in "solitary confinement" at the end of a chain, Muffin had little exercise or interaction with others. By being chained, she was susceptible to taunts, teases, and worse by passersby, not to mention being left to battle the bitter cold with little to no protection.
When a member of PETA's Community Animal Project (CAP) discovered little Muffin, she was shaking uncontrollably, so chilled to the bone that she couldn't sit still, even momentarily, on the frozen ground. The tips of her ears had been eaten away by flies, indicating that she had suffered outside during summer's searing heat, too.
The CAP staffer convinced Muffin's guardians to give her up. Now this golden girl is treasured by her new guardians. She lives in a cozy high-rise apartment, surrounded by doggie toys. Numerous walks every day are the extent of her exposure to the elements nowadays. Thankfully, she will never be part of a chain gang again!
