1998: Jonathan
When PETA staffers found Jonathan, he was struggling to free his wing from a fishing line strung across a pier. We got to him just in time, because as he struggled, the line became tighter. Without our intervention, he would have died painfully.
Fishing hurts other animals besides fish—this deadly pastime also kills millions of birds, turtles, and other aquatic animals every year, who slowly starve to death after swallowing fishhooks or becoming entangled in fishing line. Sadly, monofilament fishing line is one of the top three threats to sea animals.
Thanks to the caring staffers who untangled him, Jonathan did not become a victim of this cruel sport. Instead, he was released, fully recovered, two weeks after his rescue.
