1995: Stanley
Just days before Stanley and another steer named Willis were scheduled to be killed, a frantic call came in to PETA. The farmer's new wife had befriended the gentle steers and could not bear the thought of their being sent to the slaughterhouse.
PETA contacted Helga Tacreiter, the owner of a cow sanctuary in New Jersey, and she agreed to foster Stanley and Willis until a permanent home could be found for them.
When Helga went to pick up Stanley and Willis, she found them in a field littered with doughnuts. To save money, the farmer had been feeding the steers day-old doughnuts. To this day, Stanley still has a sweet tooth. He and Willis are such sweethearts, Helga couldn't resist adopting them permanently.
