1993: Runke
Runke was one of 200 chinchillas who were kept in tiny cages in a Gaithersburg, Maryland, basement and bred for fur. The chinchillas were skinned in the very same room, in full view of other terrified animals. When the fur trader finally decided to sell the house, Runke wound up in a pet shop, where he was found by a compassionate PETA member, who contacted us right away.
Runke was taken to Aspin Hill, a sanctuary owned by PETA, where he could live freely and explore the landscape, which wasn't too different from his native habitat in Chile.
