1984: General
When General was rescued from a horse slaughter operation in Texas, he was so weak and frail, he could barely stand up. Horses were trucked to Texas from all over the country—forced to travel for days in double-decker cattle trucks with no food, water, or rest—then auctioned off to be slaughtered. PETA sent a team to investigate, and we found horses who couldn't walk, horses with infected eyes, a mare and her foal drowning in a sea of mud, and a horse in a stream with barbed wire fencing through one of her legs. Hundreds of horses died of neglect.
PETA's Ingrid E. Newkirk attended the auctions where the horses were purchased and shipped to slaughter. She saw horses whipped in the face, beaten with straps, and crammed into chutes for shipment. PETA purchased some of the terrified horses, including General, and sent them to loving homes. Following our exposé, the Texas operation closed its doors forever.
